View Full Version : possible to put a sport/turbo/abarth shifter assembly into a pop?

brand new 500 pop owner here. i love the car so far but one of my few complaints is the shifter knob. i do not like the design. i want to try and put the shift assembly from the sport models in there, but i notice they do not have the reverse lock out pull ring. how different are the 2 shifters? would i need to do any fabrication to get the sport shifter to work?

Just take the reverse lockout off. They are the same shifter otherwise. The best thing you can do is add the neu-f short throw to it to have more of an aggressive feel or even the craven speed which replaces the shifter entirely. Just purchase the one for the abarth and then you are done. Let me know if I can help you otherwise.

thanks for the confirmation. yes the plan was to get a short link at the same time.

only other question, is there a solid/hard bushing kit for the shift linkage yet? i hear those are great for eliminating slop in the shifter. after a quick search i have found none.

I liked the lock on the shifter, very European

If it's just the color of the shift knob, you could always paint it like I did. I didn't like the shiny chrome.

You can install an Abarth shift knob into a Pop or Sport AND retain the reverse lockout feature. I call this the "Hidden Lockout" modification. The following Picasa link provides a pictorial review of the modification proocess:

Interesting mod, but looks a wee bit awkward. Does the Abarth/Turbo have any lockout at all?

The Abarth & Turbo do not have a reverse lockout mechanism like the Pop & Sport. I had this modification in my Pop before I traded it in for an Abarth. Worked perfectly and prevented potential over-shifts beyond the 5th gear gate.
