Hi All, I am a new member and like my Fiat a lot, but we just had to leave our Fiat at the dealer for the last 3 weeks to have the head replaced after the head gasket blew. I was just wondering if anyone had to have this done or if it was a freak thing.

thanks
Wayne

First post... And it's because of a problem.

There are too many problems that can lead to a broken Headgasket... And many of them are caused by the person behind the wheel.

Welcome to the forum.

First time I recall hearing of such an issue, more details would be appreciated by all I am sure.

There was one of the Prima's that had a head gasket go and a couple of other 2012 models had the problem, but not extremely widespread.

Thanks for the welcome, :) I have 2012 Fiat 500, auto, with approximately 20000 gentle miles on it. Sorry I didnt mean to start off on the wrong foot whining about the car, its a well built car and Im happy to own it.

It has been running great since we got it new, but recently when started cold we felt it misfiring then once it warmed up it went away, brought it to the dealer the first time and they reset the codes (engine misfire on 3 and 4). A week later it happened again, This time they they replaced the head. They said there were two leaks. Once between 3 and 4 and one between 3 and the water jacket, so they replaced it all. Its good to know its not a common problem, Im not going to be concerned about it.

thanks again for your assistance

after my 10,000 mile checkup. i had the oil changed and that same week, i got a check engine light with code P1239. which is low oil pressure. when i popped the hood, i noticed the coolant was below the mark and there were no leaks under the car. i topped it off and cleared the code. so far the light hasn't been on again. i took it to the dealer to have them look it over and they said it's ok. but lately i have been noticing a misfire at startup and the coolant level dropping. i also have been noticing white smoke at startup, but i figure it's normal. the car is at 13,000 miles. i'm having my local mechanic look at it.he is good, he works by referrals only, he just doesn't take anyone. i trust him more than the dealer. i'm wondering if the coolant is leaking into the oil, thats why my coolant is dropping?

Are you under warranty? If you are I would recommend you not clear a code the next time it pops on and have your dealer check it out. You need to have the issue documented in case something happens and they can't take your word for it. Especially if it is an intermittant problem. Low oil pressure is the most serious of all warnings.

Maybe your independent mechanic can check the oil pressure for you so you can see it for yourself. The dealer will have to verify it themselves , too, but at least you'll know before you cruise into the dealer. If the dealer checks your pressure, I would have them show you they are doing it right in front of you. Good luck.

I got my car in March and I've put 14,000 miles on it... at the pace I'm going, I'll be at 150,000+ after 5 years...

A simple way to confirm in your driveway, is to pull the dipstick and look at the oil. If it has the consistency of a chocolate milk shake, you are getting coolant in the oil. Usually this is the sign of a blown head gasket, but could be a crack in the block or head.
