Hello

My name is Ryephile and in March I bought a 2013 Abarth in Rosso with 17" wheels as the only option. Since then I've made some subtle changes to it to improve it. I've been in the automotive game for quite a while now, here's a quick summary:

*Raced 1/10th scale R/C cars for 10 years. Won 2 Michigan state championships, top 10 in the midwest ROAR series. At one point I wound my own electric motors and designed my own off-road buggy that was mid-motor, where I fabbed the chassis and suspension arms myself.

*Built 4 street rods with my father, the last one, a '32 Ford highboy style hot-rod, literally from the ground up. I MIG welded the frame rails, laid up the fiberglass for the body, calculated the suspension geometry wheel rates [subsequent spring rates and anti-roll bar rates needed for neutral steady state cornering with street tires], built the wiring harnesses, fabbed sheetmetal panels, the whole smash except upholstery and paint.

*University of Miami for acoustics-based Audio Engineering [an ME with emphasis in acoustics], also OCC with a minor in Psychology.

*co-founded Detroit Tuned in 2004, a MINI Cooper aftermarket tuning shop, which is still successfully in business being run by my ex business partner. I headed up R&D, designing bits such as a BBK, upgraded bypass valve, figuring out which vendors offerings worked, why, and creating a logical and functional upgrade path that's still used to this day. I'm still deep in the MINI Cooper community, hosting events and attending the annual MINI's on the Dragon that I co-founded back in 2003.

*Many personal project cars, including an E36 325i converted to //M3 spec, NA Miata, R53 MINI Cooper S converted to single turbo that made 318wHP on 93 octane, and my current '07 Lotus Exige S track-day car. Some other interesting cars I've owned include a '99 Neon R/T, '05 Lotus Elise, '10 VW GTI, '11 VW TDI, '12 Prius C and a total of 5 MINI Cooper S through the years.

*I'm currently a mechanical engineer for an automotive supplier here in Metro Detroit. I'm also active with the Rolls Royce Owners Club, Points and Condenser preservation society, MiVE, Xceedspeed, and many others.

I replaced the stock stereo with all new bits: Pioneer head unit that streams bluetooth audio plus has 2 USB ports and an Aux input, Polk MM speakers, two Dayton 8" subwoofers, and an Alpine Class D full-range amplifier tucked under the passenger seat:

...and the car I traded in to get the Abarth, a Prius C. Don't laugh! Seriously, this car was almost fun to drive and got a legit 51 MPG. I did a full suspension makeover with Whiteline bits and KW Variant 3's and 949 6UL's for summer tires. Here's a shot with winter shoes:

LOL well since you asked: I also do a handful of HPDE's a year, ride my Ninja 300 and Specialized MTB, shoot amateur photography [well I've been paid twice for my work sillylol ], design and build loudspeakers, and spend time with my wonderful partner. :)

Thanks! It's a bunch of fun. The Abarth brings me back to the R53 MINI days; it's raw, unapologetic in its flaws, and has a boatload of character.

Not without major surgery. The fascia is not tangential to the axis of the head unit installation. It looks good enough in person that I don't feel compelled to do something drastic to make it perfect.

Nice write up. Your Mini photos fondly remind me of my old Mini S.... I was actually just about to pick up a few parts from Detroit Tuned before the transmission failed on it. It's good to see the Mini spirit live on for many previous owners in their enjoyment of the Abarth. Thanks for sharing! :)

Ryan, Thanks a bunch for posting your background. Very impressive! Love your Lotus Exige! It's a beautiful car with nice lines. Must have been hella fun to drive.
Your audio install is nicely and cleanly done. That figures, you have a ME in Audio Engineering. Funny, I also used to race off road electric and gas 1/10 trucks and buggies, and most recently got into 1/5 off road gas Baja truck, but sold it to support my new habit of modifying the Abarth. I also owned an 02 Mini S back in the day. I am intrigued with the new Mini GP, but not at the price tag so I'll stick with the Abarth for awhile and have fun modding it.
Cheers,

The Abarth now has over 11k miles on it and is proving to be just as entertaining and fresh as delivery day. I'm thoroughly pleased with the total package and look forward to many more miles with it. For those of you that know me, I usually trade out cars every 9-months to a year. Being 10 months in with the Abarth and being fairly disgusted at the thought of "downgrading" to a less exciting daily driver is quite a unique position for me. I'm still quite enamored with the lovably raunchy attitude the Abarth has in spades.

I'm still planning on fixing the dampers, and there are some aftermarket goodies in the works that I'll no doubt be unable to resist that actually improve the car both in the corners and underhood. I look forward to it all.

Does that amp power your hi's mid's and subs? Also could you take a picture if you get time of where the dual 8"s are mounted? Thanks I kind of like where the beats audio sub is located but always like to see different audio configurations as I can never leave anything well enough alone. Also all your cars past present and future look amazing.

Yes it's an Alpine 5-channel amp. The Polk 6.5" component set is powered by the front pair of channels, rear stock speakers for rear channels, and the mono for the pair of 8" Dayton subs in the trunk. I don't have a picture handy of the subwoofer enclosure, but it's nothing special to look at, just a carpeted rectangle sealed (Qtc = 0.7) enclosure in the middle of the trunk with an 8" on each side, horizontally opposed to cancel vibrations.

Cool thanks for the info. I was thinking about just putting the beats speakers on a better quality amp and see if the sound quality improved a little more before going all out and upgrading everything. I might give the alpine a try and if I blow a speaker then it gives me a good reason to replace it :)

I actually ran the MRX-V70 in place of the stock amplifier for about a week. It was a big improvement over stock, but IMO the Polk MM's [once broken in] made an even bigger improvement. Now that I did the full system, I can finally enjoy my music. :)

FYI, the stock Alpine system uses the same main speakers as the Beats. The Beats adds the full featured amplifier and the subwoofer to the stock Alpine setup.

Dude, it's 3F outside right now, and it's been the roughest winter since 1904 for us. I hope more than anyone that the weather for FotD is nice! fingersx

All I want to do is wash the car, install my Rally Armor flaps, Bilstein coilovers, AAD engine mount, and Whiteline FCAB's that've been sitting on the shelf waiting for a day that doesn't suck outside.

Bit of an update:

*Toro Rosso now turned over 18k miles. It's still a super fun car and no matter what else I test drive (like the new F56 MINI) I always get back in the Abarth and a grin appears.
*I got a nail in my new Bridgestone RE-11 in the passenger rear on the inside shoulder. Thankfully I was able to plug it and it appears to be holding after a high-speed break-in.
*Something hit my passenger door and left a big scuff on the door and the mirror. Perhaps a shopping cart? There's no sheetmetal bending, and it doesn't look like the typical door ding from a parking lot. Confused. I was able to use those cool micro-brushes from AutomotiveTouchUp and fill in the scrapes and then wheel it down with Meguiars Fine Cut and then Zaino AIO. It's much less noticeable but still frustrating. This is why we can't have nice things. I could wet-sand it but at this point I want to keep as much paint thickness as possible.
*Found the windshield washer rubber tube leaving the pump was cracked and starting to leak. I just needed to trim about a 1/4" off the end and put it back on the barb on the pump. Easy on paper but took a bit to actually do, since it's buried.
*Finally edited my engine belly pan. It now has 5 attachment points instead of 6. That 6th one was ripped off over winter, so I'm going to let nature decide what's best. LOL Tin snips cleaned it up and I'm good to go. No more dangling bits.
*Gave it an oil change and new filter. 4 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 and a Mopar filter.

I discovered the transmission drain plug is hidden behind the subframe. I'll have to grab a 12mm allen L-key and cut it down so I can actually remove the plug. Stupid Fiat design obviously didn't think about servicing this.

In the process of removing the windshield washer bottle to fix the leak, I removed the fender liner. OMG there was probably a half pound of sand trapped between the side sill and the fender liner. Yikes. I had to get a dustpan and broom to clean up the pile on the garage floor after scooping it out. That can't be good for long-term rust protection. It reminds me of the gunk that gets stuck in the front fender of NA Miata's and then they just rot from the inside out. Hopefully the RallyArmour flaps will help keep some of that out of there in the future. I'll have to do a follow-up inspection in a few months.

Kind of a downer update. I suppose in that light it's impressive that I still very much enjoy the car. I've gotten rid of cars for much less, so if anything it's a testament to how endearing the Abarth is. :)

Isn't that the truth ! There's a certain esoteric something about Abarth cars that's able to wiggle it's way into your soul and then simply refuse to leave !

And by the way, thanks for all the technical wisdom you've shared with us. Much appreciated. Your boost leak fix is going into the 2012 this summer!

If you were wondering where I've been lately, I dove head first into the deep end on a new automotive project.

'92 Miata with GReddy turbo, Megasquirt, Koni 8041 w/hyperco springs, Torsen LSD, Hard Dog roll bar, and only 48k on odo. Not a lick of rust anywhere, which is becoming mighty rare.

I picked up the car in Florida and drove through the Smoky Mountains and the Tail of the Dragon en route home. Here's the car at Fontana Dam. :D

The car is going to get a mega overhaul and will be my new top-down HPDE toy. I'm waiting for BEGI to finish up their new turbo kit, and I'll be putting in a GT2554R, fresh FMIC, and Megasquirt3. I also have a pair of Sparco seats, Schroth 6-point hans harnesses waiting for install. I still have to buy big-boy brakes, but that won't be 'til springtime after the engine is all sorted.

Oh, and I sold the Lotus. :(

The Abarth is still kickin' strong. Turned over 25k on it, and all it good other than I need to replace the cracked windshield. Too much bass, no not really, I got a rock chip.

Cheers,
Ryan

I'm not sure on the whole story. Previous owner was a racer for Honda Motorsports and along the way schmoozed Bobby Rahal into signing the trunk lid. :)

Someone on a Miata forum also claims the car was featured in the May 1999 issue of Sport Compact Car as one of the first turbo Miata installs. I can't prove it, but it would be cool if it were true.

^^it's actually a 1.6. Crazy I know. Here are some updates since last year!

*New turbo, ECU, engine wiring harness, oil cooler, coolant system, dampers, bushings, front bumper lip, brake cooling ducts, brakes, seats, harnesses, new top, wheels, tires, steering wheel....um pretty much everything but the paint and the engine block!
