Chris Harris: "This might just be the best day of my working life. The nut-job launch event for the Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic was pure, Italian, chaotic genius with Markku Alen and Juha Kankkunen. Watch and smile."

I love Chris Harris. Best driving videos on the internet on the best Car related channel, Drive, on the internet. His video this week is the Ferrari F12 with 5 sets of tires to turn into smoke.

these are the cars that got me into italian cars. ferrari? you can keep it. i want a lancia. the thing about lancia is they had the balls to do something crazy and use it to win. if i remember right the 037 was the only rwd car to ever beat the 4wd audi. if it weren't for them being banned from ralley we woulnd't be seeing audi commercials about ralley heritage. we'd see lancia comercials about audi taking second. some day when i'm rich i'll take a trip to europe and find a delta integrale to ship back here with me. i saw a rare delta integrale ralley when i was in japan but he drove it infrequently and i never got to talk to the owner, chances are he didn't speak any more english than i spoke japanese though.

Dart1.4T I would settle for a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo! When I was in Italy, I could have bought one and brought it back but my Dad warned me about having it "federalized" The cost would have been out of my league.

weren't the beta monte carlos available in the states? that's right we called them scorpions because chevy had the monte carlo, there is a difference in the headlights and horsepower but basiacally the same. you might be able to find one. but they aren't very good cars or easy to get parts for. they x1/9 was probably a better car despite the anemic engines. still the monte carlo/scorpion looks a little cooler and has the twin can engine and seem a little more grown up than the x1/9.

Back in the mid 1970s the Lancia Montecarlo or Scorpion was the ultimate Fiat, and I always dreamed of owning one. It was only sold for 2 years in the US - 1976-77, I forget the total but it was a just tiny handful. It was very expensive - something like $12,000 when a Corvette cost $9,000. There was no way I could afford one in those days, but about 6 years later I found one siting in a barn with16,000 miles on it. A doctor bought it new because he liked the color (Verde Metallizato), and only drove it a little and parked it.

The car was a masterpiece of design and innovation (first car manufactured at Pininfarina, first bonded glass to bodywork, mid-engine, etc, etc.). It gathered crowds wherever I parked it. Supreme handling, comfort and style. The US smog regulations stifled the power, but in those days the first thing you did was to "de-smog" a Fiat and get back some of the power that was missing. I had an ANSA header with the 4 tailpipes and no cat and could smoke my buddies hot Scirocco, so don't believe the car mags when they say the car was slow. I hit 130 mph on the Thruway coming from Albany. I miss it a lot...

The Lancia Montecarlo or Scorpion in the US started life as the Fiat X1/20. it was going to replace the Fiat 124 Spider, but Fiat management gave the car to Lancia as a reward for their impressive racing wins in the early 1970s. The car was the basis for the 037 Rally seen in the video. This car was designed in the early 70s. Compare what Fiat was doing back then to what Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Honda etc., had. This was the era of the Pinto and Vega. Cars like this are the reason why Fiat enthusiasts waited 30 years for Fiat to return.
