What's the widest rim I can fit on my 500E without anything special like spacers etc? (Yes, I said "wide". Low profile is not of particular interest to me, but width would improved my traction and handling in this torque beast.)

you can fit WIDE wheels 8-8.5 but then have to run a narrow tire which makes the rim stick out farther than the tire. Is that the look you like?

I have 7s with the 215 40 17 bfg g force tire and they run wide. My 215 40 17 is 1.25 inches wider than the oem 205 40 17 and 1/2 inch wider than the toyos and yokohamas

Actually, my goal in the widest TIRE, which I didn't make clear. So something like the 8-8.5 rims wouldn't be what I want, since it is literally a wider rim but not a wider tire. I just want more rubber on the road :)

Sounds like I should be keeping an eye open for 7's in the used market -- as that appears to be the widest I can go and still put usable rubber on them.

Since you are driving the 500E you may want to consider a skinnier tire. A narrow tire will lessen the rolling resistance and improve MPG or MPCharge.

Thanks for the reminder. That's very true. At this point, however, I'm less interested in preserving range and more interested in maximizing performance and handling, which I think a wider, stickier tire will achieve.

Just to confirm, is that price for a set or each rim? (Wheels is plural, so just checking)

These are aluminum rather than plastic, same size. From Hong Kong, but better than plastic either way.
