View Full Version : Considering 500L Trekking - Moving from MINI Countryman S ALL4

Folks,

We are nearing the end of the lease of our 2011 MINI Countryman S All4 and are considering the 500L as a replacement. Our Countryman has been a fun ride BUT we were victims of the clutch fiasco that plagued many 2011-2012 manual transmission cars. Without getting into details (search for the "Smelly Clutch" thread on NorthAmericanMotoring if you are really interested), while we now have the improved clutch we feel that the MINI may be overpriced for what it delivers in comparison to the 500L.

However, there are trade-offs worthy of consideration:
We only want a manual transmission - this means we can not get leather seats (bad idea Fiat!) and moves us "down" from the Lounge to the Trekking model. We actually prefer the looks of the Trekking but want the equipment level of the Lounge.
We would prefer all-wheel drive but will consider the 500L's front-wheel drive so long as torque steer is minimal.

Based on the current Fiat configurator, looks like we would want the 500L Trekking with Premier Collection #6 (MSRP $25,145). Does this model even exist in the USA? I can't seem to find any at this time. We have until end of Jan 2014 with our Countryman so maybe the supply will better by then.

Anyone here make the transition from a Countryman?

Anyone here take delivery of a 500L Trekking with Premier Collection #6?

Let me know what state you're in and I'd be glad to look around for you online.

You can have the interior done in Katzkin leather through your Fiat Studio. There are a few pictures at the top of a 500L redone in leather from the dealership I went to here:

I made a post about the leather with a link to the generic seat configurator here:

Thanks Andree. We are located in the Philadelphia area (eastern PA). Would prefer white with contrast roof. Would be willing to move before our lease expires for the right deal.

No sunroof, no heated seats. But if you have the seats done in leather, you can have the heating part added too. And you should be able to have the compact spare tire added as well at the dealership.

Thanks. Will wait until properly configured models become available. Adding these items as you suggest is not effective on a lease.

I'm getting closer as they're getting farther away.

This one is all yellow, no contrast roof, but has all the other goodies:

Where would the roof color be noted on the sticker?

I agree with Andre. Just get leather seats added after you get the car. And get an Easy model, easier on the back pocket.

+1 the Katzkin is OEM on at least some Fiats and they had the perfect correct pattern (and other unique ones) for my Pop - really dressed up the interior and the installer put a little extra foam in so it feels richer as well.

Same place as the rest of the goodies, in the upper right corner. You can see an example of where the color option is mentioned on the window sticker of this vehicle:

I've been looking all over the east, and I'm NOT finding all the goodies PLUS the contrast roof for the manual Trekking.

Playing around with the configurator on the Fiat site, it won't let me add the roof WITH the other options. The Fiat site isn't always accurate in reflecting actual production vehicles. For instance, it's showing the 500e black interior as having an orange headrest. I have yet to see an orange headrest on the black interior, and I've seen plenty of cars online. Fiat also shows the Turbo model, and says it's a Sport in one area.

I've found just a couple more Trekkings with all the options EXCEPT the contrast roof, they all have the MSRP of 25,145. The first one I posted in California is an example of this.

Trekking in black (in transit):
http://www.fiatusaofcicero.com/new/FIAT/2014-FIAT-500L-4fde45c00a0a000200691263321986c2.htm

Trekking in green:
http://www.fiatusaofnorwood.com/new/FIAT/2014-FIAT-500L-boston-f85233ac0a0a0002001a8f49c829f1e6.htm

I use a combination of the official Fiat site, using their locator tool, and the DealerRater site. It's all manual clicks for me:
http://www.dealerrater.com/reviews/FIAT/

I've checked all the dealerships listed on their site (this may not include ALL dealerships located in a particular state) in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Ohio.

All the inventories can change rapidly, so what isn't available now may become available in the next shipment or the one after that. There were no Trekkings at all in California for awhile, and then a shipment came in and started getting cars to all the dealerships, selling out fast. Then another shipment came in, and it looks like a few of those are still in process of being trucked, with others on the lot.

I've also been checking for the manual Easy, just in case I can find one of them with all the options you desire. This is the Easy model in white with black roof, manual, has different interior/exterior than Trekking:
http://www.fiat500usaforum.com/showthread.php?10512-the-new-500L-joins-the-team-at-MADNESS!!

If it appears it will be very hard to find over time, you may wish to consult with your local Studio to see if you can place an order for the vehicle. It will take months. Therefore, you will wish to place the order soon, so as not to be left without a car when your current lease expires.

I agree. I'd just order one. They will become easier to find in all iterations very soon.

I agree with Andre. Just get leather seats added after you get the car. And get an Easy model, easier on the back pocket.

This is not a good solution for a leased vehicle. Generally, no aftermarket or dealer installed items can be capitalized on a lease meaning all are paid 100% out of pocket.

Maybe not.

I know you like short, to the point, posts. This will not be one.

As I said, the Fiat configurator will not let the sunroof be added to the white car if it has the black roof option. You can check it out here:
http://www.fiatusa.com/hostc/bmo/CUX201405BFFM44A/2DG/options.do

Click on Exterior, you will see it has the black roof pre-checked. Now, try to add the sunroof. You'll get this message:
7332

The black roof will add on not just the black roof, but also the Popular Equipment and the Beats/SiriusXM stereo. And different wheels with a black painted interior.

Now, I have checked the entire US on the DealerRater site. THE. ENTIRE. U. S. I found under TEN Trekking vehicles with all the options you want, but NONE of them has the painted black roof. I posted links to most of the cars I found in my profile on the message area.

And, the configurator will not let me combine the sunroof and a contrast roof on the Easy model either. But look what I found:
http://www.rickcasefiatusa.com/new/FIAT/2014-FIAT-500L-Miami-FL-4ff9d3fa0a0a006500f2f70caa564be3.htm

It is an Easy, Automatic, White w/black roof, sunroof, Popular Equipment, Beats/SiriusXM, heated seats (no compact spare tire). It's all listed on the window sticker. And listed on the linked page above.

So, how it possible if the configurator does not allow it? I do not know.

And why am I telling you about cars you don't want? Because the car you want may never become available. If the Fiat site info is true, it will not become available. But I've found one example that says the Fiat site is not true. Only one.

I did start to look for the Easy model also with all the options with the manual. Again, the closest I came was NOT a manual, it was that one white car at Rick Case in Florida. I did not generally look at automatics when checking the websites, since it was a manual you wanted.

There were originally ELEVEN colors to be coming in for the 500L. The light green in the US got scrapped at the last minute. Still showing as available in the UK, but I have not yet seen an example of one.

Things change. Maybe that ONE car got through. Or, maybe more cars will come along and the Fiat site is very wrong.

What I don't want to see is you sitting there waiting for a car to come in that isn't coming in. That is the worst case scenario. If you think my long post is a waste of time, imagine waiting for months for your dream car only to find out it's just not available. And all the other cars that were the next best thing (the ones without the painted roof, but with all the other options you desire) you passed on. Cars you could have been driving already.

As they say, forewarned is forearmed. You need to check with your local dealer to see if the combination you desire will ever be available. If they say they can't order it the way you want it, then you know now, and can then decide which is more important, the black roof or the sunroof.

I was so determined to find just ONE example for you. Just one. Any color with a manual, all the options, with the contrast roof. In a Trekking, or even an Easy. I have failed. :apologetic:

But I know it is somewhat helpful, as there is the yellow Trekking in Maryland (no painted roof). The yellow color is the Trekking exclusive color, it doesn't come on any of the other 500L models.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Thanks Andree. You have been very helpful.

I know about the configurator and the fact that it won't let you select a sunroof and a contrasting roof color. It's either a configurator error, a temporary restriction or a permanent restriction imposed by Fiat. If the latter, well a body color roof would not be a problem.

This is not about finding a dream car for me. I already have that in my garage :) This is for a car to replace our Countryman which is not even our primary vehicle. I heed your warning and that is why I am investigating 5 months prior to lease expiration. The Trekking collection #6 inventory will improve and I will reach out to local studios so they are aware of my interest.

And by the way, I've nothing against long posts. You should see some of the posts I wrote in the aforementioned Smelly Clutch thread :)

Since more cars seem to be coming in, I'm doing another look around for you. Still not finding the black roof w/sunroof on white Trekking with all the goodies.

White, all the goodies, no painted roof, Chicago:
http://www.fiatusaofchicago.com/new/FIAT/2014-FIAT-500L-4f3e1a130a0a00490052a6650b26ecd9.htm

It has the gray dash, not the gloss dash.

Edit add-on:

There is kind of good news, though. There are shipments coming in, and there are more manual white Trekkings, like here:
http://www.fiatusaofpatchogue.com/new-inventory/index.htm?SByear=2014&SBmake=clear&SBtrim=clear&SBbodystyle=clear&SBprice=clear

and here:
http://www.fiatusaofalbany.com/new-inventory/index.htm?SByear=2014&SBmake=clear&SBmodel=clear&SBtrim=clear&SBbodystyle=clear

So keep your eyes open locally for new batches.
