View Full Version : ROAD/RACE-We Have BILSTEINS!

Finally Bilstein has released Their Coilover Kit. This is a kit we have been testing for over a year on both 500 and Abarth. I can say the delay has to do with the high standard of quality they demand. Both U.S. engineers and German ones had to sign off on them. The ride can be low and fast on the track and still have an acceptable ride. Bilstein has made these affordable enough for all to have. Cheap kit do exist but these are not a cheap kit. These were made on the car, not parts that were copied and then sent back here be to fit on our cars. We have them ready to ship this week. Price is $1379 for the Bilstein Coilover system. Order online or call us to be sure to get a kit before they are all gone.

The usual questions following an OP that lacks any real information:

*spring rates
*TUV ride height range
*damper design [twin or mono tube]?
*damper adjustment [rebound-only, tied comp/rebound, 2-way, 3-way, etc.]?
*total stroke along with droop height.
*construction: damper bodies, coatings
*support: rebuildable? Warranty?

Spring rates according to the Eurocompulsion listing is F: 252lb / R: 217lb
Range is -20mm to -40mm (0.8" to 1.6" *rounded to 1 decimal place)
Bilsteins B14 PSS' are Monotubes and non-adjustable, that said they are matched to the spring unlike other coilovers that use generic adjustable...
Stroke/Droop... no clue RRM would know, call?
Bilstein lists fronts as zinc coated and rear is yellow (paint?) coated.
Rebuild-ability... Bilsteins usually are rebuildable... to the point where it can even be DIY'd if you have decent instructions. (Read many places can rebuild/revalve Bilsteins, how it affects the manufacturer's warranty is another matter.)
Warranty I'll leave for RRM to answer.

Range is listed as TUV approved Range 20mm to 40mm, it actually can go lower.

Bilsteins are fully lowered in rear and fronts have about 10mm remaining.

Measurements fender to floor are 24" F and 24.25" R (this is as low as Id recommend on this set, I will have a full review after a few more weeks with these, they handled the city street pretty well)

Build quality is very very good, components are small works of ART.

Someone asked about warranty. I can say the warranty is on Bilstein. I do not know the details but check their site. I am sure it is better most any of the other brand sold for FIAT. You have to remember this is Bilsteins best selling kit in Europe. They have years of experience with this platform.l

Do you have any rubbing issues at that lowered levels?

None, they are very close to the level of the BCs if not a hair lower.

I don't remember to be honest, it was a rush to get these in (its not even aligned), and to get the RRM rollbar in...as in 130AM the EVE of the Freakout.

Please Note: Unless otherwise instructed by BILSTEIN personnel, please return the product in question to your original place of purchase for warranty processing. If this is not possible, please download the Warranty Evaluation Form below and send directly to BILSTEIN.

In the past, I've had to handle bilstein warranty claims (re-purchase & return failed unit for refund) through the vendor who've I originally purchased from.

We will handle things if needed but Bilstein always decides things.
That said, we have been testing these coilovers for over a year with no issue. We also tested Bilsteins on the 500 SPORT for 10 months, again no issues. Bilstein returned the car to us at the lowest ride height too. We are rolling with a front lip, brake cooling ducts and on 18 inch wheels. We do not scrape on speed dumps or anything else. Here are some pictures of ride height in both.

I used to own a set of Bilstein PSS9's for my Mitsu Evo 9 and loved them. I'm actually considering these for my 500T since these are cheaper than the KW V3's. I'll be calling RRM once I have the money in hand.

KW V3s are a huge disappointment. Just got a set for a customer. They are the cheapest looking and likely not tuned like the Bilsteins. I know i should not say this but it is the truth. I was disappointed just opening the box. Everyone that looks at them was not impressed with the V3s. Then factor in that they are almost $1000 more and that seals the deal. Bilsteins are the best (arguably) but surely best bang for the buck, no argument.

Note that because the car is lowered, it doesn't mean you can drive the car over speed bumps or go through entrance with ease like stock height, just clarifying things if anyone is curious of this as well.

On another note, its now official with our banner/flyer about it!

Call us for details on these. We have had a few guys switch off of other brands now and they are impressed with the improved ride and handling. It is a case similar to where guy had other ECMs from other makers. They were good but once they switched to ours, they realized it can be so much better. It is worth the money for sure.

Thanks for pointing out the typo.

We now have our full order in from Bilstein and on the shelf. These are ready to go. There are a few going out but because of the rareness and newness of these you will not find reviews yet. There are likely about 3-4 of us in the U.S. that have used these. They are the ones that are going to fit the bill for most everyone from street/comfort emphasis drivers to weekend track guys. These cost nothing for what you are getting. The years Bilstein have in Europe with the car should not be lost on people. They really valve these shocks, they worked every detail. These are the same shock and spring system used on 500 Police cars even in Europe. Kind cool, I think. We can now call it COP SUSPENSION. :-)
