OK, to be honest, there were only two cars in GS today, me and a 2004 Mustang, and while it was close, the Abarth pulled out the victory. I'm still new to autocross this year, but it is just so much fun to get out there and drive the car like this. Thanks to the South Carolina Region of SCCA for another well run event at Darlington. We missed the rain, and with a field of 50+ cars had time for 8 runs today.

I was totally stock, and on the last three runs pumped up the fronts to 44psi. Maybe you guys with experience can tell more than me, but it didn't seem to matter much to me, meaning that concentration and getting all the gas/brake etc. to improve is what I'm thinking about out there. The first two events I drove I saw gains of several seconds on about every run, but today only dropped my time by fractions at a time, so maybe that's where just a little experience starts paying off a bit.

Over in C class, where lots of Miatas live, I could tell the competition was fierce, where my son was in the pack of about 4 guys all within a tenth of a second. Much tougher to win in that class!

I tried to upload a photo from today but didn't get it to work, but here's one from another website: http://www.fenderforum.com/userphotos/index.html?recid=77499

How were your times compared to those Miatas/MX5s in CS and ES? I find that my runs have been consistently about 5-7 seconds behind them in the 8 runs I've done with my stock Abarth this year. I get beat each time in GS by a fellow who has been running his 2000 Celica for several years (this is my first year) and uses comp. tires. I've gotten my times up from 85% to 92% of his times (easier to use percentages than actual times due to the wide variances in track lengths).

Just for comparison with yours, Robert, I've begun running 45psi in all 4 tires in the last two runs and this seems to work well. I'm hoping the 2014 rules changes benefit me since my "nemesis" will have to either go to street tires or move to a different class.

My son runs in C stock, and he beat me by about a second, I was around 36 seconds. I haven't seen the PAX results from yesterday yet, but that probably is close enough for me to beat him, but other Miatas with Hoosier tires are running a couple seconds faster. It would be a hoot to throw a $1500 bucks worth of Hoosiers and wheels on the Abarth, but I'm good with the stock Pirellis.

I agree, that if next year STOCK means STOCK tires, then that will be good for more competition, and the guys with race tires will be in some TIRE or other category.

Here's the photo from yesterday. This young kid wanted to ride on my last run, so he jumped in.

Next event in our Region is August 3rd in Charleston, and the registration is already open.

It won't mean actual stock tires but tires with at least minimum treadwear ratings. Hoosiers won't be allowed but the Dunlop Z2s will be. I believe that next year's rating is 140 with 200 for 2015. The Dunlops are 200.

Ah, showing off! :-) Always a recipe to go slower because there's an audience...

I was surprised that this was my fastest run, with the extra passenger! Luckily this was also a re-run, because after I finished and was shutting it down for the day they told me the timing system had a minor issue, so that made this run possible. I think 4 of my runs were faster than the Mustang anyway, but it's always good to get another run!

Here's all the cars from this event in C class and G class. First is raw time, and as you would expect the C class guys were all faster.
Second list shows PAX time, so that put me ahead of two of them.
The fastest guy in the 03 Miata had Hoosier tires, and I think the rest of us all were on street tires.

Congrats! Shave off a couple of seconds and you'll be right there with the 03 Miata.

My driving is nothing to write home about, but since you asked, this link should work. About 7 runs from this event posted on Facebook.
